Your credit scores and reports are used by lenders to decide to give you credit—or not.
Lenders look at your credit score or credit rating, which appears in your credit report, to work out if they should lend you money or give you credit.
If you’ve signed up to a mobile phone plan, utility contract or applied for a loan or credit card, you have a credit score.
This number influences how much credit a lender is willing to give you. The lower your credit score, the more likely you’ll be perceived by the lender as having a higher risk of not paying back the money.

What if I have a bad credit score?
It’s not ideal, but it’s no cause for alarm. Start with the basics: pay your bills on time, then catch up on missed payments. And if you’re a new credit user, don’t open to many new accounts.
Depending on the credit reporting agency used to calculate your score, it will be a number between zero and 1,200 or zero and 1,000.
The number is rated on a five-point scale (excellent, very good, good, average and below average).
